Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 locks down director and key cast

Charlize Theron will return to collaborate with a new director in a follow-up to the popular Netflix action flick The Old Guard. The action thriller The Old Guard, released last year on Netflix, was one of the streaming platform’s most successful launches to date, and with good reason too. The film starred Charlize Theron as the leader of a group of immortal soldiers, and was based on Greg Rucka’s screenplay which was in turn based on his comic book saga. It had a clever conceit, some excellent action sequences and a magnetic star turn from Theron whose action credentials need no repeating here. We’ve known for a while that the sequel was inbound, but now Netflix and its production partner, Skydance, has secured the services of Theron for the sequel, alongside KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor. They’re all set to reprise their roles from the original film. What’s more, the film has found its director too in the form of Victoria Mahoney, whose second unit work on JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has seen her become an in-demand filmmaker. Mahoney replaces Gina Prince-Bythewood who helmed the first film. Prince-Bythewood has elected not to return, having received offers to do lots of other things, including The Woman King with Viola Davis, following the success of The Old Guard.  We’ll bring you more updates on the film as we hear them.
