It’s being reported that Sasha Baron Cohen is heading back to his roots for his next project: potentially a new Ali G film.

Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman is claiming (via World of Reel) that Sasha Baron Cohen is lining up a return of one of his most famous creations. Ali G was one of Cohen’s earliest creations and the character that rocketed him to fame, from his humble beginnings as a bit-part character on The 11 O’Clock Show to the star of his own movie in 2002’s Ali G Indahouse.

Cohen retired the character a few years after the film’s release, although he did briefly resurrect him for the 2012 British Comedy Awards. Whilst Indahouse was a success upon release, it left behind the setup-style interviews that made Cohen such a star in favour of a more straight-laced narrative comedy. Cohen would revert back to his former style for 2006’s Borat, which would be far more critically-successful.

Apparently, Cohen recently revived the character on-stage in Australia and enjoyed the experience so much, it has him full of enthusiasm to return to the Staines-based interviewer and bringer of ‘truth’ to the masses.

We’re not quite sure where an Ali G cinematic revival could go though, should the story prove to be true. The character is surely far too well-known to hoodwink unsuspecting interviewees anymore, and we’re not sure there’s an appetite for the character beyond that. It’s certainly a story that’s come out of nowhere and we’ll let you know if we hear anything more substantial that confirms the project’s existence.
