Sci-fi franchise Cloverfield is returning to cinemas with a new film, and the first few details have come to light.
When
Cloverfield was released back ion 2008, nobody quite knew what to expect. A masterclass in viral marketing ā much like
The Blair Witch Project ā it used social media and websites to generate speculation and discussion, Matt Reevesā found footage monster movie certainly didnāt seem to be the start of a franchise.
Then, quite out of the blue, came
Dan Trachtenbergās 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016. Repurposing an existing script ā one of the writers of which was
Whiplash director Damien Chazelle ā to fit into the
Cloverfield mythology, the single location film was more of a psychological thriller than outright science fiction, as a distrust builds between the three characters sheltering in an underground bunker from what two of them claim is an alien attack.
Two years later, the franchise switched tone again with Julias Onahās
The Cloverfield Paradox. Leaning heavily into both science fiction and horror, the plot was once again reworked from writer Oren Uzielās original spec script to incorporate
Cloverfield elements, as a group of astronauts must figure out the mystery after Earth seemingly vanishes.
Now, another instalment is in the works. Acclaimed screenwriter of the television series
Girl/Haji, Joe Barton, penned the script this time around, which will be directed by Babak Anvari. Anvari has just helmed the impressive
Beast, starring Idris Elba.
Abrams will produce through his company Bad Robot, with , Reeves, Bryan Burk, and original
Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard as executive producers.
They are keeping tight lipped about plot details, whether it is another standalone piece that has been reworked or a direct sequel.
It is currently filming, weāll keep you updated as we hear more.
