The new musical adaptation of The Color Purple hits cinemas on 26th January – and here’s the brand new trailer for it.

After a beloved 1985 adaptation by Steven Spielberg, The Color Purple headed to Broadway. Now it’s making its way back to the big screen as a musical. Starring Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures), Danielle Brooks (Orange Is The New Black) and singer Fantasia Barrino, the new film is set to be released on 26th January.

The Color Purple tells of the struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s. It’s also about the strong bond shared by three friends. Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation saw Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery in the leading roles. Winfrey is involved in this new adaptation as a producer, as is Steven Spielberg.

Directing the musical is Blitz Bazawule (Black Is King). Also producing are Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones. Marcus Gardley’s screenplay pulls from both the book by Alice Walker and the stage musical, so should hopefully be a perfect blend of the two versions of the story.

Also starring in the film are Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Halle Bailey and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. There’s a lot of brilliant talent involved in this film, and we’re certainly looking forward to it.
