Nicolas Cage is set to reprise his role as Spider-Man Noir in MGM+ and Prime Video’s new series. More on Noir below.

Well, Spider-Man Noir is officially back. The long-standing rumour that Nicolas Cage would reprise his role from 2018’s Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse in a TV series has finally materialised.

Variety reports that Cage is officially on for MGM+ and Prime Video’s Noir, which will follow Cage’s Spider-Man Noir as “an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

The series will debut in the US on MGM+ before heading to Prime Video globally, but there’s no release window yet.

This is the first time Cage is portraying the character in live-action and it’ll be interesting how the team translates the animated character into a flesh and blood human. In Into The Spider-Verse, the character was animated in all black-and-white, but there’s no word on if the series will adopt a similar highly stylised approach.

“Expanding the Marvel universe with ‘Noir’ is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. “The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will act as co-showrunners for Noir as well as executive producers. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal will be producing too.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

Spider-Man Noir briefly appeared in last year’s Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse in a non-speaking part. The live-action series has been in development for some time now and we reported in March that Cage had had “a conversation” about the series, but this is the first time we’ve received confirmation it’s all actually happening. Noir will also be Cage’s first fictional TV series credit.

More on Noir as we get it.
