Just when you thought it was safe to get back into Mordor, The Rings Of Power is returning to Prime Video with a very posh-looking trailer and a 29th August release date.

Following the magical whupping he received at the hands of Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel in season one, Charlie Vickers’ (spoiler alert) Sauron is rebuilding his strength as he sets out to forge these magical rings everyone keeps going on about. First on the to-do list: get himself some pointy ears.

The first season of Prime Video’s fantasy epic broke all sorts of records at the time of its release in 2022. For a start, it remains one of the most expensive seasons of television ever made, with a budget clocking in somewhere in the region of $450m on top of the reported $250m the conglomerate spent on the rights.

By the looks of things, it doesn’t seem like they’ve been cutting corners on season 2 either. In the short trailer, we’ve got a wormy root monster, a splashy giant shark monster, and a lovely big elven cavalry charge (horses, while not strictly monsters, do tend to be quite expensive).

Lead by first-time showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, Prime Video also reported that season one was one of their most-watched original series at the time of its release, viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide.

This comes shortly after the unexpected news that Peter Jackson is returning to produce a new pair of Lord Of The Rings movies for Warner Bros. (currently in charge of the property’s film rights), the first of which is due out in 2026. With a working title of The Hunt For Gollum, the first film will be directed by and star Andy Serkis as the titular ex-hobbit as he tries to escape from a few familiar faces.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power arrives on Prime Video on 29th August.
