After the success of Evil Dead Rise, there are no fewer than two more sequels in the works. More on those plans here:
It’s not easy taking a beloved horror franchise and making a new instalment that can fit into its timeline, honour the original and still be its own film. Many have tried, many have failed (looking at you, The Exorcist: Believer).
Lee Cronin hit the perfect balance with 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which was a satisfyingly crunchy, gory sequel. We reported earlier this year that, thanks to the success of Cronin’s film, we would be getting a new spin-off set in the world of Evil Dead. Sébastien Vaniček, who directed the spider-horror Infested, will be directing this one.
Now, Deadline reports that there’s also another instalment in the works. Francis Galluppi is on directing duties for the still-unnamed film and will also pen the script, which will hopefully include a Deadite or two.
If you haven’t heard of Galluppi before, not to worry. His first feature film, The Last Stop In Yuma County, isn’t technically out yet. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest and will be released on the 10th May in the US. No word on UK distribution yet, but we’ll keep an eye on that for you.
“Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence,” franchise creator Sam Raimi told Deadline in a statement. “He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”
Evil Dead is fast becoming a franchise that champions and nurtures up-and-coming directors. Fede Álvarez directed the 2013 reboot (a surprisingly good one!) and is currently working on Alien: Romulus, which is hitting our screens in August. Cronin, meanwhile, has just founded his own production company, Doppelgängers, which will focus on producing genre films.
Both new Evil Dead films are still in early stages of development, so understandably, there are no plot details, cast or release dates to share at this point. We’ll update you as soon as we learn more Evil Dead news.
