Ahead of its September release, another glimpse at one of this year’s most anticipated films: One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Paul Thomas Anderson being given lots of money to go and make something that looks strangely close to an action film is shaping up to be 2025’s most fascinating throw of the dice for any studio. Warner Bros has already benefited once this year from backing a talented auteur with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. We’re hoping the studio enjoys the same success with September’s One Battle After Another. While Warner Bros boss David Zaslav keeps talking about leaning into franchise films and the like, repeated hits from unique filmmakers will surely persuade him to keep investing in interesting and original cinema, too. Hopefully.
So even though Warner Bros has now released a second teaser for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, let’s cut them some slack… after all, they’ve got to market a PTA film that’s reportedly coming in at around $120m. That feels like it could be quite the feat given the financial track record of his previous films, so if a little extra marketing muscle is required to create a Sinners-like wave of audience interest, then so be it. This teaser is shorter than the last one, but packed to the gills with action shots. It has us hyped for the film itself.
It’s based on the 1990 novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon, and flicks between events in 1984 and the 1960s. It follows the exploits of one Zoyd Wheeler, a former hippy who, along with his teenage daughter Prairie, becomes embroiled in the War on Drugs that President Ronald Reagan declared at the time.
