Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer returns to IMAX screens this week, just without Barbie alongside it.

The gigantic success of arguably Christopher Nolan’s biggest commercial gamble, this summer’s Oppenheimer, continues to have positive ramifications throughout the movie industry. After years of struggles for cinema, we’ve ended up with a three-hour biopic about the man behind the atom bomb. And that biopic has earned over $900m worldwide, outgrossing, by way of yardstick, every Marvel movie of the year. It feels all a bit upside down, and that’s not a bad thing.

It looks now that Oppenheimer is going for the $1bn mark too, ahead of its physical media release later this month. It’s been announced that Nolan’s movie will be returning to IMAX screens for a one week extra engagement later this month. This is a worldwide thing, and in the UK it’s been confirmed that the film will be back at the massive BFI IMAX screen from this coming Friday. It doesn’t look like there’s a fuller regional roll-out happening: this writer’s local IMAX is still alternating between Killers Of The Flower Moon and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, as intriguing a double bill as the movie Oppenheimer was paired with over the summer.

It won’t be double-billing with Barbie this time though. Checked that.

With an almost-guaranteed Oscar run ahead of it as well, chances to watch Oppenheimer on the big screen aren’t likely to disappear after this coming week. Yet it does all present a chance to watch a film clearly made for a giant screen, in its natural environment.

As for that physical media release, you can find more details on the release here.

And it’s up for preorder as well, right here. 22nd November is the release date…
