Rob Savage’s next horror film, Other Mommy, is in cinemas this October. Here’s the new trailer, featuring at least one Jessica Chastain.

This is the latest opus from British horror director Rob Savage, who broke through in 2020 with the spectacularly frightening Host, before going on to make 2021’s Dashcam and 2023’s Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman.
Other Mommy, quite clearly, gives the Oscar-winning Chastain a chance to apply her considerable talent to a genre movie – here playing Ursula, the doting mother to the eight year-old Bella, and also her nightmare, supernatural counterpart. The latter has the J-horror tendency to fold herself up into weird shapes and lurk beneath tables – oh, and her cooking skills are distinctly suspect.
Pasta needs plenty of water, lots of space in the pan, and preferably a gentle boil rather than the kind of raging heat Chastain’s character applies here. Ten to 12 minutes is plenty for most shapes of pasta; perhaps nearer ten if you prefer it slightly al dente. If the pasta looks blackened, like Chastain’s, you’ve gone way too far.
Other Mommy is in cinemas from the 9th October, and looks thoroughly terrifying, and not just because of the kitchen bits. So terrifying, YouTube won’t let you watch it here – but click the link below and you’ll be able to see it on the tech monolith’s website.

18th July 2025: If you were scared senseless by Rob Savage’s COVID-era screamfest Host, you’ve likely been keeping tabs on the British director. Blumhouse also noticed his talents after Host and offered him a three-picture deal, keeping the filmmaker well and truly busy after his transition from indie films to Hollywood.
The first of those films was 2021’s somewhat controversial Dashcam. But 2026 will see the release of the second film Savage has made with Blumhouse. Titled Other Mommy, it sounds like an interesting companion movie to Savage’s 2023 horror, The Boogeyman. (That film secured itself a cinema release, despite 20th Century Studios’ initial plans to dump it on Disney+.)
This writer is keen on seeing what else Savage has in store for us, and we’re betting you are, too. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about Other Mommy.
What is Other Mommy about?
The short answer is, it’s about the other mommy to eight-year-old Bela.
Or, at least it’s a creature that seems to desperately want to be a mommy of sorts. Emerging from the little girl’s closet, the creature keeps asking, “Can I go into your heart?”, but Bela refuses each time. Unfortunately, Bela’s understandable reluctance let a supernatural creature climb inside her body might spell danger for her family, perhaps of the mortal kind.
Like The Boogeyman, which was based on a Stephen King short story, Other Mommy is based on a book. Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around The House, adapted by Nathan Elston. This isn’t the first time Malerman’s work has been transferred to the screen; Netflix’s smash hit Bird Box was also based on one of his novels. Thankfully, audiences will eventually be able to experience the terror of Other Mommy on the big screen instead of a laptop.
The book itself is written completely from Bela’s perspective. The chapters – all 51 of them – are short and sweet, some as short as a page or two. Malerman doesn’t even use quotation marks for dialogue and the novel is written almost like an uninterrupted stream of consciousness. It certainly places you in the world of a young child, but there’s little in the sense of describing the surroundings or characters.
For example, we never really learn what the Other Mommy looks like. We know it looks terrifying, because we read how others react to it and we get the slightest details about its appearance.
Who’s in Other Mommy?
The Other Mommy tries to get inside Bela’s heart, but who stars in the movie?
Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman have all been cast in the film. Their specific roles aren’t clear, but Duplass will likely play Bela’s dad, referred to as Daddo in the book. Chastain will most likely play the little girl’s mother and Lachman might voice the Other Mommy, or the other way around. Or she could play someone completely different! We’ll find out when the film hits cinemas.
As for Bela, eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark was recently cast in the role. Despite her young age, Clark is already a seasoned actress and is due to appear in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere later this year, playing Bruce Springsteen’s (Jeremy Allen White) sister Virginia.
With such a small cast and a strong focus on family and how supernatural forces can break it apart, Other Mommy will likely make for an excellent double feature with The Boogeyman.
In The Boogeyman, a family struggles to recover from the traumatic death of its mother, essentially making the film a study in grief with added scares. In Other Mommy, Bela’s parents are having some issues of their own that Bela observes, perhaps creating a subconscious need for an “other mommy” onto which she can project her feelings.
Sounds like we can expect creature-based spooks and a view into a child’s mind. There are perhaps some parallels to Henry Selick’s Coraline as well with its sinister other mothers.
What happens at the end of Other Mommy?
