Samara Weaving in Ready Or Not

Ready Or Not star Samara Weaving will lead the cast of Bella, a hyper-stylised 1980s New York action film.

Before its late 20th Century clean-up, New York City was a dirtier, sleazier metropolis, not as much fun for tourists and the the people who lived there but great for cinematic depictions of a stagnating city, oozing with crime and corruption. These days, sanitised superheroes seem most at home in the city’s clean and crime-free streets but we must admit, we do love checking out old movies that depict New York as a dangerous and depraved place.

Happily, an upcoming project is set to recreate the iconography and tone of a sleazy and dangerous New York and what’s more it will Samara Weaving running around and terrorising bad guys, something we really rather enjoyed in 2019’s Ready Or Not.

The project is titled Bella and here’s the synopsis:

‘Set against the backdrop of a crime wave that gripped New York City in the ’80s, Bella is a hyperstylized action thriller about a cop’s daughter who, as her father clings to life following an assassination attempt, goes on a rampage to unearth her father’s attacker and weed out deep-rooted corruption in the New York City Police Department.’

Sounds good to us, doubly so when you consider that Crawl's Craig Flores is producing, and John Wick director Chad Stahelski is reportedly involved too. Larysa Kondracki, who directed Picnic At Hanging Rock is set to helm the project. We’re liking everything we’re seeing here and hopefully, the budget will be low enough for this one to take some creative risks. We’ll bring you more on Bella as we hear it.
