The long-mooted sequel to Passion Of The Christ  is once more being touted as being on the brink of production.

Here’s a story that we seem to run annually but it’s one that may yet lead somewhere: 16 years after its release, reports have surfaced claiming a sequel to The Passion Of The Christ is very much still in active development.

Mel Gibson, who remains a controversial figure to put it mildly within Hollywood, is still planning to helm the project with Jim Caviezel set to star in the title role once again.

Currently titled The Passion Of The Christ: Resurrection, Caviezel has claimed ‘it’s going to be the biggest film in world history’ with the film reportedly set to take on the ‘final three days of Jesus’ death, his resurrection, and the hereafter.’

Whilst the first film made an incredible amount of money at the box office, grossing over $600 million from a $30 million budget, a lot has happened in the world since, not least in Gibson’s personal life. The first film was pretty controversial as well but reports of this happening just won’t go away.

In fact, World of Reel is reporting that it will indeed happen this year which would mark an acceleration from the usual yearly update on this project which generally offers vague optimism that it will happen at some time in the future.

It’s a story that’s being widely reported but we’d take it with a pinch of salt until an official announcement emerges. Still, that original film made a lot of loot (and that’s in 2004 money) so you never know who might be tempted to push the sequel project over the line and into production. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
