BFI London Film Festival will come to a close this year with a gala screening of Piece By Piece, a biopic of Pharell Williams, told with bits of Lego.
File this one under things we did not foresee: The BFI London Film Festival will come to a close with a Lego biopic of Pharrell Williams, titled Piece By Piece.
The festival will open on the 9th October with the world premiere of Steve McQueen’s Blitz and Piece By Piece will conclude the 12-day festival on Sunday 20th October.
“Piece by Piece is a film of enormous joy and invention,” London Film Festival head Kristy Matheson said. “In telling the story of Pharrell Williams, entirely in Lego, acclaimed documentarian Morgan Neville brings a sense of wonder to this story that matches the creativity and verve of his subject. This is a must for fans and will charm the uninitiated alike, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Piece By Piece to close this year’s BFI London Film Festival.”
The animated film will explore the life and career of Williams and will also feature the voices of Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Gwen Stefani, Busta Rhymes, and Snoop Dogg. The idea to make the biopic not just animated, but with Legos came from Williams in early discussions with director Morgan Neville.
Both Neville and Williams are confirmed to attend the gala screening which will take place at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank. The film will also screen at the festival’s 9 partner venues and will also screen the feature across the country.
“The BFI London Film Festival has been supportive of my career for a long time, with my first time screening there being over twenty years ago. Bringing Piece by Piece to the LFF means the world to me, and getting to be the closing night gala is the cherry on top of this huge honor. I’m thrilled to celebrate this film with the London audience,” Neville commented.
After its UK premiere at the festival, Piece By Piece will be in UK cinemas 8th November.
