The Princess Diaries series is getting a third instalment at Disney, and the first details have landed.
2001’s The Princess Diaries and it’s 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries: A Royal Engagement have become beloved family favourites over the years.
Chronicling Anne Hathaway’s Mia as she transforms from an ordinary teenager into Princess of Genovia, the characters from Meg Cabot’s book were brilliantly brought to the screen by director Garry Marshall and screenwriters Gina Wendkos and Shonda Rhimes, respectively.
Now, almost twenty years since the last film, a third instalment is in the works at Disney. There is no word yet on whether Hathaway or Julie Andrews will reprise their roles, but it is reported to be a sequel rather than a reboot, and Hathaway has stated in several interviews that she would be keen to return to the role.
Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji has penned the screenplay, with a director yet to be attached (Marshall is no longer with us). Original producer Debra Martin Chase will return to produce alongside The Other Woman screenwriter Melissa Stack.
There is no word yet on when The Princess Diaries 3 will go before the cameras, but we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
