Quentin Tarantino opted not to direct his Cliff Booth sequel movie – and instead took $20m off Netflix for David Fincher to make it.
According to a new report at The InSneider, Quentin Tarantino did pretty well out of his unused screeplay for a sequel to Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood
Having chosen not to direct the film as his tenth and final movie, Tarantino had the written script for the project – which we think is called The Continuing Adventures Of Cliff Booth – but the filmmaker reportedly wasn’t that enthused about choosing to finish his career with a sequel.
As such, he eventually nixed the project.
However, one person who was rather keen to see the film made was its star, Brad Pitt who is said to have orchestrated the sale of the script to Netflix, with David Fincher now directing. The new report suggests that Netflix gave Tarantino a reported twenty million reasons to persuade him to give a project directly over to the small screen.
If that is the case, of course.

All of David Fincher’s projects for Netflix thus far have released straight onto the streaming platform, and as such, fans of Fincher have had to be content with watching his newer movies at home. It’s far from perfect, with even Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux publicly weighing in on the matter in 2024, saying, “he’s still a great filmmaker, but he doesn’t exist at the same level in our hearts and minds than when he showed Zodiac in competition. He wants to work alone, quietly, making his films for platforms. It’s a different world. We miss him. We want him back in our world.”
Yikes.
Could Tarantino’s deal with Netflix have included some kind of guarantee to show the film in cinemas first? Other Netflix directors such as Greta Gerwig and Guillermo del Toro seem to have managed to arrange such a deal, so we’d be surprised if Fincher can’t come to the same terms with the streamer. Plus, from Tarantino’s perspective it wouldn’t be a great look for the filmmaker to be criticising the state of cinema from one side of his mouth whilst glad-handing Netflix from the other and lining his pockets in the process.
Whether this happens, we don’t yet know, but when we do hear more on this one, we’ll certainly keep you posted.
