Shōgun season 2 is heading into production in early 2026 – and we have a few more details on the new season to share.

Shōgun was one of 2024’s best TV shows, and news of its renewal for another season quickly followed that year’s finale. The problem? Season 1 had already adapted all of James Clavell’s 1975 novel.

That didn’t stop showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks from pursuing a completely original new season, however, and while it’s still some time away, Shōgun season 2 is steadily moving forward. The writers’ room has now been set up, and the new season will go into production in January 2026 in Vancouver, which will be transformed into 17th century Japan.

The new season will take place ten years after the events of the first season, which ended with Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) winning the war against Ishido and the revelation that Toranaga had purposefully burned down Blackthorne’s (Cosmo Jarvis) ship to stop him from leaving Japan. Although one of the final images of season one is Blackthorne beginning to salvage his ship, it would seem that Blackthorne is destined to stay in Japan if the action picks up ten years in the future.

Sanada and Jarvis have also both been promoted to an executive and co-executive producer status respectively alongside their starring roles.

Shōgun was a major success for FX and Disney+. The series gathered an impressive 18 Emmys, the most ever won by a series in a single season, and it was praised for its writing, acting and visuals. We were also very stirred by the series and you can find our coverage on it in our archive of reviews and other postings

Shōgun has already been renewed for a third season, which is set to conclude the series’ overall narrative. Without a doubt, both seasons will deal with Toranaga’s rise to power and his ascension to the titular war lord.

We’ll bring you more news on the series as it reaches our ears.
