The company behind The Amazing Maurice is launching a new UK firm ā€“ Kazoo Films ā€“ to bring more family animated films to cinemas.

Speaking to one or two people in the UK film industry over the last few months, and there’s an ongoing belief that it’s family movies underpinning the financial fortunes of cinemas. Numbers do seem to bear that out as well, even though the supply of family features has been wavering a little.

Step forward then Kazoo Films, a new British animation movie distribution outfit, that’s been launched by production company Cantilever Media. Cantilever was behind the movie The Amazing Maurice, that launched via Sky a year or two back.

The aim for Kazoo is to put the emphasis on independent commercial family movies, for distribution in the UK. With a planned output of four movies a year, it’ll be releasing them via cinemas, streaming and other home entertainment formats (which suggests physical media might be in the mix).

The founder and CEO of Cantilever Media, who presumably will fulfil the same role at Kazoo, is Andrew Baker. In announcing the launch of Kazoo Films, he said that “We have identified a gap in the market for a film distribution company that focuses solely on animated feature films.”

“Kazoo Films’ slate will prioritize independent, commercial family films that we can release theatrically in the UK and Ireland. We want to showcase that animated films can generate significant theatrical interest in the UK, shining a spotlight on the territory as a potential co-production and sales market for animation producers and sales agents worldwide, and ensuring these films are seen by the UK cinema audience.”

Cantilever is already working on The Amazing Maurice 2, although it’s unclear whether that’ll be going through Kazoo, or if there’s an existing deal with Sky for the movie.

Either way, this sounds like a nice, positive story at a point where there aren’t that many of them to report. Hereā€™s the Kazoo website, to keep an eye on.
