Director Andy Muschietti has been chatting about the upcoming IT prequel show Welcome To Derry, and there might be more than one season coming our way.
There’s still no firm release date for Welcome To Derry, Warner Bros.’ IT prequel show that’s supposedly releasing this year after a delay or two. In fact, we don’t even have a trailer yet, but director Andy Muschietti has been talking about the series’ future already.
Chatting with Radio TU (via Bloody Disgusting here), Muschietti revealed that there’s a plan in place for further two seasons of Welcome To Derry. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but Muschietti did assure that Warner Bros. was happy with the first season and eager to proceed with another, which would still be based on snippets of Stephen King’s original book.
The book follows a group of teenagers and later their adult selves as they encounter the titular IT (aka Pennywise) and attempt to fight it. Pennywise emerges every 27 years in Derry to cause chaos and tragedy, so there’s plenty of history there to dig into.
“It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff,” Muschietti explained.
“There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908,” the filmmaker went on to reveal. The first season consists of nine episodes and Muschietti is serving as the director on many of those. Muschietti and his wife Barbara Muschietti have developed the series together with Jason Fuchs.
Muschietti directed both IT and IT: Chapter 2 to great success, and that success is expected to carry Welcome To Derry. Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider are set to star and the series also brings back Bill Skarsgård as IT/Pennywise.
Speaking of Bill Skarsgård, we recently caught up with the actor to chat about Nosferatu, but couldn’t resist asking him if he still carries roles like Pennywise and Roman from Hemlock Grove with him after these years.
You can take a look at that chat below.
We don’t have any confirmed release date for Welcome To Derry, but we do know it’s heading to HBO in the US, which usually means it’ll show up on Sky Atlantic here, but again, nothing has been confirmed. We will keep you updated though.
