DCU boss James Gunn has revealed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in development – but no Gal Gadot this time.

DC Studios boss James Gunn has confirmed that a new take on Wonder Woman is in development as we speak, with a script currently being worked on.

As Warner Bros’ superhero division prepares for the launch of its new-look cinematic universe with the upcoming release of Superman next month, there are plenty of projects that we know about in the works and presumably, plenty that we likely don’t know about. However, with Gunn’s announcement we can now add a Wonder Woman film to the list of upcoming DC movies to look forward to.

Of all of the possible announcements, this is perhaps the least surprising admission that Gunn could have made. The DC Studios overseer revealed the project’s existence while chatting to EW ahead of the upcoming release of Superman on 11th July.

“We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now,” revealed Gunn, before going on to add that this would be a new take on the character by confirming that recasting would be part of the process.

Given that a few elements of the old DC cinematic universe such as John Cena’s Peacemaker character, have transitioned into the new-look DCU, there might have been hope from some quarters that Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins would be returning to revive their take on the character for another adventure. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Gunn also confirmed that the project would be “separate” from the HBO Paradise Island prequel series set on Themyscira, the home of Wonder Woman and her fellow Amazonians. With regards to that show, Gunn says things are “slow moving, but it’s moving.”

It won’t really come as a surprise that more Wonder Woman is on the way. The character comprises one third of DC’s ‘holy trinity’ along with Superman and Batman. Those characters are already slated to appear in multiple features, so it stands to reason that Wonder Woman would be joining them sooner rather than later. Batman is set to return in the guise of Robert Pattinson in The Batman Part II at some point, while a different version of the character will also debut in The Brave And The Bold, also in development.

As for the Man of Steel, James Gunn’s Superman launches next month and Gunn confirmed to EW that he’s already working “in some way” on a sequel to the new film, before adding: “But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”

We’re sure Gunn knows what he’s doing here, but not getting round to a Superman sequel is sometimes cited as a reason for the last DCU’s problems, given that its most recognisable character wasn’t put front and centre and was instead relegated to team-ups and cameos. Still, this is a new era. We wait to see what’s in store this time.
