Simon Pegg has been talking about working with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost again on a new comedy movie.
Simon Pegg is currently undertaking the press duties demanded by a Mission: Impossible film, and as his time in one beloved film series could potentially be coming to an end, Variety has been asking Pegg if he might be planning to return to another. Might a Shaun Of The Dead sequel be on the cards?
Pegg’s answer is pretty straightforward: a sequel to the beloved zom-com isn’t happening. “We’ve told that story. It had a proper beginning, middle, and end. Adding to it would risk diluting what made it work — like what Alien 3 did to Aliens.” Ouch.
The actor did take a break from throwing shade at Alien 3 to reiterate that he would be reuniting with Nick Frost and Edgar Wright in some capacity though, adding, “It’s not a matter of if, just when.” He also confirmed that the new project the three have been noodling on is a comedy.
The trio have previously given us the beloved Cornetto Trilogy – Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End – but haven’t worked together since 2013.
While The World’s End wasn’t hailed as an instant classic as the other two were, it still rightly has plenty of admirers. But given how the trajectories of their careers have continued to rise in the last decade, it’s fascinating to imagine what they might have in mind next time out.
“When Edgar and I do our next movie, we’ll probably disappoint everyone,” Pegg added, we’re presuming with a note of levity.
Pegg’s comments echo a statement he made in 2023, where he also insisted that their next collaboration would be something fresh, stating: “we don’t want to do a take on action movies or a take on sci-fi or a take on horror. We want to make a movie that is totally its own thing, existing outside of the Cornetto trilogy.”
“You know, my favourite of the Cornetto trilogy is The World’s End,” he says, “because it’s the least audience friendly. It’s the darkest of the three. It’s the most challenging, and I love the idea of actually putting the audience in a position where they have to feel a little bit uncomfortable and not necessarily cozy into the familiar. So whatever we do next, it’ll be difficult, that’s for sure.”
Perhaps when Edgar Wright finishes up on The Running Man, set to release later this year, work on this will begin in earnest? We’ll let you know when we hear more.
