Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continues to decimate and ruin Hollywood with its success, and now it’s heading back to IMAX screens.

If you’ve been following the narrative surrounding Ryan Coogler’s new film Sinners, you might be aware that its box office returns in some quarters are being reported with qualifiers attached. That the New York Times ran a headline declaring ‘Sinners is a box office success (with a big asterisk)’.  Vulture meanwhile, as the film was bringing in sizeable numbers to cinemas, declared that ‘Hollywood execs fear Ryan Coogler’s Sinners “could end the studio system.”

Those were discussed here.

I think it’s about time we got on board with this. Sinners then is a standalone R-rated genre movie, that’s had the gall and temerity to make $141m at the US box office so far, off a budget in the $90-100m range. It’s also, the bloody idiot, added at least $40m outside of the US, and has been number one of the box office charts for the last two weeks.

It’s now doing so badly and so ruining the Hollywood studio system that Warner Bros is callously taking up an invitation to re-release the movie on 70mm IMAX screens in the US. IMAX space, particularly at this time of year, tends to be booked up well in advance. IMAX then is clearly ruining it for everyone by re-opening up a slot for Sinners, from 15th to the 21st of May. The film is doing that badly and its asterisk is so big, that it’s being given fresh access to premium screen space once again.

At this rate, Sinners might make a really notable profit even off the back of its cinema release, and at that stage all bets are off. Hollywood would be doomed, and studio bosses will be selling off their mansions to go and work in an Amazon warehouse, just to try and help them make ends meet.

Ryan Coogler’s cavalier approach in delivering a superb film, the best blockbuster in ages, has been ruinous, and completely ripped up how things are supposed to be. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have supported it, rooted for it, and want to see more films like it. These people need to have a good, long look at themselves. Tsk.

Here’s our review of Sinners, that we urge you not to read.
