Star Wars | Daisy Ridley still hasn’t seen the script for her upcoming film

Rumours continue to swirl about the future of Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars project, with the continued lack of a script being a key point of gossip.

It’s no secret that Lucasfilm has struggled to get Star Wars films into production over the past five years, with 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker being the last movie from a galaxy far, far away to see the inside of a cinema.

The reception to that film was largely on the unkind side, but nonetheless, the film’s story is set to be continued with Daisy Ridley, the film’s lead, returning as Rey in a new project that was announced in the early part of 2023 (but in development for considerably longer).

Since then the film has been reported as having been hit by a least two delays.

The first delay is said to have happened because of the strikes that caused such mayhem in Hollywood last year, while the second problem came early this year when scribe Steven Knight is said to have handed in his draft of the film. It reportedly did not go down well with Lucasfilm and there was gossip speculating that Knight might leave the project or decide to focus his energies elsewhere, given how many changes Lucasfilm was demanding.

Of course, all of that is highly speculative, but what doesn’t help Lucasfilm is that the film’s star, Daisy Ridley is out in public promoting her new film Magpie, while also having to field questions about the next Star Wars film, which may or may not be called New Jedi Order.

Speaking to Collider, Ridley revealed that she is yet to see a script, saying that she isn’t even sure if that is the film’s title. “I don’t know! I mean, I think so,” she answered. “From the announcement, I don’t think that’s changed. I know a script is happening, and I’m going to be reading it imminently, which is very exciting.

“I think it [filming] could be this year. It could be, but I’m not sure. I think to be honest, the writers’ strike has obviously delayed quite a lot of things. So the intention was later this year. Hopefully, it will be. Otherwise, top of next, I would imagine.”

So Daisy Ridley hasn’t seen a script yet, which in turn throws up lots of questions about the film’s status. Back in January, World of Reel claimed that the film was being delayed ‘indefinitely’ and in the wake of Ridley’s comments, the outlet has returned to those claims, pointing to sources that state the project might even have been quietly shelved.

While that’s hard to credit, when you consider the history of Lucasfilm’s mismanagement of Star Wars, it’s not outside the realms of believability. The untitled project is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and currently has no release date set. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
