The Full Monty is returning for a sequel series, reuniting the cast and original screenwriter, and here’s the trailer.

To this day, The Full Monty is among the most successful British films ever made, taking an incredible £250 million on a budget of £3.5 million. It has since been adapted into a hit play.

The original film, released in 1997, told the story of a group of former steel workers who decide to put on a striptease act to solve various financial problems. The film is well remembered for the ‘dancing in the dole queue’ scene and of course the finale, performed to Tom Jones’ You Can Leave Your Hat On.

It is perhaps not the most likely suspect for a legacy sequel series for Disney+, but there are a lot of things in its favour, not least the fact that the original cast – including Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Wim Snape and Tom Wilkinson – are returning. Hugo Speer was sacked from the series after inappropriate conduct claims.

We also have an official synopsis, which reads as follows:

The Full Monty follows the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield, and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier and more desperate moments. It will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.

Original screenwriter Simon Beaufoy has returned to pen the series.

The Full Monty will stream on Disney+ from the 14th June.
