Lara Croft returns in the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft, due on Netflix in October. Hereās the first trailer:
We seem to be in the midst of a pretty fertile spell for Tomb Raider fans. After much conjecture, Phoebe Waller-Bridgeās Tomb Raider series has been officially green-lit at Amazon Studios. That project is slated to go before cameras early next year so in the next few months, weāre hoping to hear who will be filling the boots of Lara Croft, the intrepid adventurer and iconic star of the Tomb Raider franchise.
On the video game front, fans certainly seemed to enjoy the recent remaster of the original three games featuring the āclassicā iteration of the character, while we know that Crystal Dynamics is working on a new game.
While itās no understatement to say that Embracer (who owns Crystal Dynamics) is a bit of a mess internally at the moment and games have been cancelled left, right and centre, youād imagine (read: hope) that funds could be found to continue development of a new Tomb Raider title.
Before any of that arrives though, we have the Netflix anime to look forward to. The new series launches on the streaming platform and now we have a first trailer. Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft picks up with the newer iteration of the character (from the 2013 to 2018 reboot trilogy of games) and has none other than Hayley Atwell voicing the iconic adventurer.
Hereās the synopsis:
āIn the series, Lara has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.ā
While Tomb Raider fans can sometimes be divided across āClassic Lara/Reboot Laraā lines, with each camp wanting to see their favoured version of the character take centre stage, a good story is a good story.
If the Netflix anime can capture the core spirit of Tomb Raider then hopefully fans from all quarters can get behind it and continue the positive forward momentum that the series is currently enjoying.
Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft will stream on Netflix from the 10th October.
