The first trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte gives us plenty of lightsaber action and hints at a power struggle. Watch it here.
Since 2020, when the series was first announced, all we’ve really known about The Acolyte is the title. Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland’s Star Wars show has been a bit of an enigma, but the first trailer, released today, has given us a lot of food for thought.

The trailer release comes hot on the heels of the first poster and release date announcement, which arrived yesterday. The poster depicts a lightsaber base and a trail of blood where the ignited blade should be.
Granted, we still don’t know much. The trailer is accompanied only by a brief tagline: “In an age of light, a darkness rises.”
The Acolyte is set roughly 100 years before the events of Phantom Menace, at the tail end of The High Republic era. The trailer opens what we assume is Coruscant as Lee Jung-jae’s Sol is training some younglings. We also catch plenty of glimpses of Carrie Ann Moss, Dafne Keen and Jodie Turner-Smith, who is heard warning an unknown character.
“This isn’t about good or bad. This is about power, and who is allowed to use it,” she says.
Most of the trailer, however, focuses on Amandla Stenberg’s character. Collider seems to have the scoop that she is a former padawan and the show’s official synopsis reads: “The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”
There’s also the matter of that red Sith lightsaber we glimpse at the end of the trailer. It’s too early to speculate who it could belong to, but we’re excited to find out.
The Acolyte will premiere the first two episodes on Disney+ on 5th June in the UK, followed by weekly episodes. The series includes eight episodes in total.
