You’ll have to wait a few more moths to see Taika Waititi’s tale of football underdogs questing for glory, Next Goal Wins.

With a World Cup happening this winter, you’d think that now would be a great tie to cash in on football mania and release a football movie. If only there was one that had already been filmed by a celebrated director, featuring an all-star cast and was simply waiting for release.

Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins was shot back in 2019, although if you’re wondering why Searchlight Pictures isn’t cashing in on the football craze, it’s because the film isn’t simply sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting for its turn to hit cinemas.

At the tail-end of 2021, Next Goal Wins underwent some reshoots to replace Armie Hammer’s performance in the film. Will Arnett came in and those reshoots were duly completed. Then, Searchlight had to figure out where the film would fit into its release schedule and eventually plumped for April 2023. Now it has been announced that the studio is pushing the film’s theatrical release from April 21 2023, to September 22 2023. It’s not known why the film is being pushed back, but it means we’ll be waiting even longer before it hits our screens.

Taika Waititi directs the film, working from a script that he wrote with Iain Morris.

The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Oscar Kightley, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi and Elisabeth Moss. We’ll bring you more updates on this one (and hopefully they won’t be regarding delays) as we hear them.
