UPDATE: Altitude films have now confirmed that The 4:30 Movie, the latest from director Kevin Smith, is heading to UK cinemas for a limited release on 13th September. The cinema release will be followed by a digital release on Altitude.film and other digital retailers from 21st October.

Our original story followsā€¦

30th July, 2024: Just as Steven Spielberg mined his film obsessed childhood for The Fabelmens, so Clerks and Mallrats director Kevin Smith will take a nostalgic look back at his teenage years in The 4:30 Movie.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends (Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup), who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys (Zajur) invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film one day, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager (Ken Jeong) and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.

The cast also includes Sam Richardson, Genesis Rodriguez, Justin Long, Jason Lee, Rachel Dratch, Kate Micucci, Adam Pally, Harley Quinn Smith and Method Man. Smith both wrote and directed the film.

Podcast: Jay & Silent Bob Reboot (2019), with writer/director Kevin Smith

Itā€™s hard to overstate just how ground-breaking Clerks was in the 1990s. Inspired by Richard Linklaterā€™s similarly low budget drama Slacker, Smith maxed out his credit card to film the story of shop worker Dante, who wasnā€™t even supposed to be there that day, and Randall as they whiled away the hours, interacting with customers, with occasional interruptions from resident stoners Jay and Silent Bob.

Since then, Smith has expanded that world into the View Askewniverse ā€“ Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jay and Silent Bobā€™s Super Groovey Cartoon MovieJay and Silent Bob Reboot as well as two sequels to Clerks and an animated series.

Smith also branched out into horror with the underrated Red State and the grotesque Tusk, among others.

The 4:30 Movie will be released in US cinemas on the 13th September. A UK release has not been confirmed.
