Spy thriller The Amateur lands on Disney+, and is getting a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release as well. More here.
Much, rightly, has been made of the fact that cinema attendances are bouncing right back in 2025, with takings up by over 20% year on year. One film whose returns I followed was James Hawes' thriller The Amateur. This feels like the kind of movie that’s been particularly squeezed out in recent years, and the Rami Malek-headlined flick, co-starring Laurence Fishburne, got a wide cinema release in April.
A year or two back, the film would have struggled to see the inside of a cinema, and if it had, the numbers would be expected to be on the tepid side. The Amateur wasn’t a major smash, but its global box office gross of $95.8m isn’t to be sniffed at.
The film came out of Searchlight Pictures, thus Disney, and as such has popped up on the Disney+ service this week. But if you’re a physical media person, then fair does to Disney: it’s getting a full disc outing as well. The Amateur is being lined up for DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
You can find the DVD listing here.
Here’s the Blu-ray.
And here’s the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray listing.
The release date for all of the, is 14th July 2025, and you’ll find a small smattering of extra features on the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.
More physical media, please. Long may it continue. And for the moment, we’ll leave you with the synopsis for The Amateur….
In this spy thriller, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a brilliant but deeply introverted CIA decoder working out of Langley. When his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, and his supervisors refuse to act, Heller embarks on a dangerous trek, crisscrossing the globe to take down those responsible, his intelligence being his ultimate weapon.
