Sebastian Stan will play a younger version of Donald Trump in a film that is set to explore ‘power, corruption and deception’ in a period New York City movie.

Sebastian Stan (pictured here in Fresh) will be taking on his most controversial role yet in The Apprentice: playing a younger version of the hugely divisive Donald Trump.

Whilst Stan is perhaps known best for playing Bucky, the brooding Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beyond that role he’s not averse to the odd creative risk.

Along with Lily James (who portrayed Pamela Anderson), his version of rock star Tommy Lee in Hulu’s biographical miniseries, Pam & Tommy was critically lauded but sparked wide debate over whether the duo (and their fellow collaborators) had the right to tell that story.

Less controversial but certainly on the edgy side was his role in last year’s Fresh, which we won’t spoil for you here in case you haven’t yet seen it.

All of that is set to pale in comparison to the firestorm that his next project is sure to ignite. Playing any version of Trump is sure to cause a stir, given that he remains as a polarising character who (despite facing prison in real life), could just as easily end up back as the US president.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stan is set to play a younger version of Trump when he was a real estate tycoon in New York in the 1970s and 80s. ‘The Apprentice is described as a mentor-protégé narrative that documents the start of an American dynasty and tackles themes including power, corruption and deception.’

The casting here feels pretty spot-on to us. Stan will be joined by Succession star, Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova who is best known for her standout performances in Borat and the Gen Z slasher, Bodies Bodies Bodies. Ali Abbasi will direct from a script by Gabrial Sherman. Sherman is no stranger to tackling notorious public figures given that he wrote The Loudest Voice, the 2019 miniseries that focused on the controversial Fox News founder, Roger Ailes.

Reaction to this one is bound to be interesting, as will the release timing too given that it started shooting this week and will likely release next year, when the real Trump will likely be mounting an election campaign. We’ll bring you more on The Apprentice as we hear it.
