Next summer’s Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars will now be winter releases.

Given that there’s been so much speculation flying round about Marvel Studios’ two upcoming Avengers films, it’s been impossible to tell fact from fiction. Stories have ranged from certain actors not being signed up to rumours of a script for next May’s Avengers: Doomsday not being locked down, despite filming ongoing and the release date being just a year away. Not a very long time for a film of this huge scale.
Still, all speculation aside we now have something concrete: Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars will no longer be hitting our screens in May as originally announced. Instead, we’ll be getting Doomsday in December of next year, and Secret Wars in December of 2027.
While the previous Avengers movies have always benefited from being big summer movies, the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home back in 2021 proved to Marvel (and Sony in this case) that you can still clear a billion dollars with the right MCU movie in December. And traditionally, the studio’s Avengers films do tend to pull in huge numbers.
As for those new release windows, those new December dates do come with some pretty stiff competition as it stands. December 2026 has Dune: Messiah releasing a day after Avengers: Doomsday, while 17th December 2027 currently has The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum releasing on that date. Warner Bros might just have moved Marvel off its Christmas card list for the next couple of years, we’d wager.
Whether those Warner Bros release dates now hold, we’ll have to wait and see but we all remember what happened last time Warner Bros got involved in a Mexican stand-off over high-profile release windows. It inadvertently gave the world Barbenheimer and frankly, it was glorious.
Finally, Disney has already filled the May 2026 slot vacated by Doomsday, adding The Devil Wears Prada 2 in its stead, while also announcing that Ridley Scott’s apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars will open on 27th March 2026. We likely haven’t heard the last of this release window story so we’ll bring you more as things unfold.
