Insects are set to be that bit safer, as Jason Statham is returning for The Beekeeper 2. Filming will get underway this year.

Comfortably one of the most entertaining films of 2024, and a surprise box office hit too, was The Beekeeper. Starring Jason ‘The’ Statham and directed by David Ayer – the duo have reunited for the incoming A Working Man, we wrote about The Beekeeper quite a lot, and it’s little secret that there was scope for further adventures. Bees need constant maintenance after all.

Good news, then. The Statham has signed on the dotted line to return for The Beekeeper 2, which is now official. He’s also going to be one of the producers of the movie as well, and presumably will be in charge of honey supplies.

Kurt Wimmer is back writing the script as well, but there is a change in personnel involved. David Ayer isn’t directing, as he’s already moved onto another project. In his place comes Timo Tjahjanto, who’s currently wrapping up the incoming Nobody 2. That arrives later this year, and then Tjahjanto will be on set shooting The Beekeeper 2 this autumn. If filming gets wrapped up by the end of the year, which looks likely, then we could be seeing The Statham and his hives by the end of 2026. Splendid news.

Plot details are unknown at the moment, but it’d be fair to say the first film escalated from a man protecting his buzzing chums to something, well, a lot more. Quite where the sequel goes remains to be seen.

Miramax is putting up the funds for the movie. Sky picked up the original for distribution in the UK, although it’s unclear at the moment if it’s going to ink a similar deal for the sequel. Still, for now, The Beekeeper 2 is definitely happening, and I for one look forward to a cinematic universe beyond that, perhaps where The Statham can tend to an entire zoo.

More as we hear it.
