Lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada has given an update on Shōgun season 2 and production is hopefully getting underway next year.

Following its numerous Emmy nominations and strong critical reception, all eyes are on the team behind Shōgun. Originally envisioned as a limited series, it was renewed for two more seasons not long after that delicious finale of season 1 aired on Disney+ (or Hulu if you’re in the US). We’ve been waiting for news on the new season ever since.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Toranaga in the series and also produces, has now given an exciting update on how season 2 is coming together.

Chatting to Deadline, the actor said they’re looking to shoot the second season next summer.

“We are hoping sometime next year,” Sanada told the outlet. “Aiming for next summer, hopefully. The writers’ room is already running, and they’re creating all day, every day.”

Sanada also explained that he’s working together with the writers to ensure authenticity.

“I put Japanese eyes on the script,” the actor said.

The first season of Shōgun adapted all of its source material, James Clavell’s novel of the same name, and while the production is collaborating with Clavell’s estate, the writers have a lot of freedom. As Sanada says, they will be guided by real history.

“So, we don’t have any novels anymore, but it means for the writers a kind of freedom. We have history. We have real models, and we know what happened. So many episodes are there in the history.”

Sanada will reprise his role in the new season and we’d also expect Cosmo Jarvis to return as John Blackthorne. We’d also love to see more of Tadanobu Asano’s brilliantly weaselly Yabushige, but there’s no confirmation on returning cast yet. A summer 2025 shoot would likely mean that we won’t see Shōgun season 2 until 2026, but such long production times are nothing new in the modern TV landscape.
