Shōgun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations with The Bear close behind with 23 nominations.

We may have just left this year’s awards season behind but there’s another major awards ceremony looming in the near future. The Emmy nominations were announced last night and they reflect a great year of TV.

Shōgun, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ ambitious epic based on James Clavell’s novel, received a whopping 25 nominations across all categories. With more seasons of the acclaimed series now planned, Shōgun qualified for the Outstanding Drama category instead of a Limited or Anthology Series.

Shōgun is up for Oustanding Drama Series and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated for Lead Actor and Actress respectively.

The Bear, which just aired its third season, is nominated for 23 Emmys across the board. Controversially, the series is up for Outstanding Comedy Series. The Bear has always toed the line between comedy and drama and many feel the series should compete in the Drama categories but Hulu has continued to submit it in Comedy. As expected, Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri were both recognised for their roles as Carmy and Sydney.

Only Murders In The Building, which is due to return for a new season in August, scored an impressive 21 nominations. HBO’s True Detective: Night Country received 19 nominations, including nominations for Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

Reis and fellow Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series nominee Lily Gladstone, who was nominated for Under The Bridge, made history as the first ever Indigenous women to be nominated for Emmys. They’re only the second and third Indigenous nominees ever, August Schellenberg being the first in 2007.

Richard Gadd’s acclaimed, but controversial Baby Reindeer also picked up nods for Gadd and Jessica Gunning in the acting categories as well as Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series. Overall, the Netflix series received 11 nominations.

The nominations truly reflect what a great, ambitious year it has been for TV. We’re glad to see a lot of British talent on show as well as diversity across the board. Andrew Scott is nominated for his role in Netflix’s sublime Ripley and The Crown picked up 18 nominations for its sixth and final season.
