Jason Statham will be keeping bees and kicking ass in The Beekeeper – and there are plans for a franchise of beekeeping movies.

It’s been quite a while since we first reported on this one, but we can happily declare that The Beekeeper is still very much an active project. This is the one where Jason Statham stars as a man who has something to do with the mythology of keeping bees, but also happens to be a former operative and a very dangerous one.

Kurt Wimmer has penned the script for the film, and it was revealed some time back that Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer was directing. Then a period of silence where we wondered if all the bees had, well, flown away.

They haven’t.

The latest is that MGM has now picked up theatrical distribution rights in the US, as well as those for some other territories around the world. We’re unclear at the moment who holds the UK rights to this one.

We do know though that filming begins in the UK at the end of this month, and that there’s plans for a franchise here. There are, after all, a lot of bees in the world, and they all need to be kept.

Goes without saying that I’m fully on board with this and can’t wait to see it. As we hear more, we’ll let you know…
