Liam Neeson is to headline Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky, and Amazon has just coughed up a fair amount of cash for it.

When film festivals are in full flow, so are the deals behind the scenes. Most we don’t hear about, and generally the film that makes the headlines is the one that sells for the most money. This particular news story seems to prove that.

However, going into the Cannes Film Festival, few would have expected headlines to be made by Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky. The sequel to the Liam Neeson-headlined action film Ice Road, this time it sounds like the big man is driving to heaven if that subtitle is any guide.

Jonathan Hensleigh is writing and directing the film, as he did with the original as well. The original was a streaming hit too, and so perhaps it’s unsurprising that Amazon has swooped in with its gift vouchers to seal the biggest deal of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 thus far.

The return of Liam Neeson going for a wintery jaunt has sold for a reported $17m, and that’s just for rights outside of Germany and the US. More money will be coming in for other rights, and who knows, if Neeson survives his upcoming drive to the sky, there may yet be a trilogy boxset in this.
