Netflix’s The Diplomat, starring Keri Russell, is returning for season two this October. More on the show below.
It’s difficult to get a second season at Netflix these days, but 2023’s The Diplomat made it look effortless. The streaming service greenlit a second season of the political thriller a matter of days after the first season dropped.
Netflix have now announced that The Diplomat season two will arrive on 31st October. Considering how long most prestige TV shows take to film new seasons, The Diplomat returns to our screens rather quickly.
There’s no trailer yet, but Netflix did release two first-look images, one of which you can see below and at the top of this article.
“In the first season of The Diplomat,” a press release for the show states, “Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is a seasoned foreign service officer more at home in a crisis zone than an upper-crust atmosphere. Sheās planning to take her next post in Afghanistan when the White House comes calling with a change of orders, sending her to London as the US ambassador to the United Kingdom.
“Itās not the behind-the-scenes world she thrives in, but with war brewing on one continent and boiling over on another, her skills will still be called upon. Kate will have to defuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and charismatic political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). Heās negotiated the end of his share of wars, but sharing the spotlight with a wife who has long-lurked in the shadows could be his most challenging mission yet. In this high-stakes political drama, the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people takes center stage.”

There’s no official synopsis for the second season as Netflix are clearly looking to keep everything under wraps for now, but the second season will likely find Kate dealing with more political scheming as well as a potential promotion. The Diplomat season one ended on a bit of a cliffhanger as Russell’s Kate faced a personal tragedy, which we won’t spoil here.
Allison Janney is joining the cast this season as Vice President Grace Penn. David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh will return for season two alongside Russell and Sewell.
“Everything we thought we knew about the Wylers changes, as does everything they think they know about each other,” teases showrunner Debora Cahn.
The Diplomat season two streams on Netflix from 31st October.
