Tom Cruise looks like heās picked a remake of The Gauntlet as his first project once heās finished Mission: Impossible 8.
Following the eventual completion of the next Mission: Impossible film, weād imagine both Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie will want to take a nice, long holiday. After that, though? It looks like theyāll be reuniting for a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood thriller, The Gauntlet.
News of the project first leaked in April and seemed to confirm earlier hints McQuarrie had dropped about their next collaboration. Having previously described their next project as āgnarlierā than the Mission: Impossible films, McQuarrie also added that āIt’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse.ā
If the remake hews closely to the Eastwood original, Cruise will play āan alcoholic cop tasked with escorting a prostitute from Las Vegas to Phoenix to testify against the mob. Plans soon fall apart as cops and lawyers are also involved in the plot to kill them both.’
Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in line to star alongside Cruise.
While none of this is official yet, a listing on Production List has stated that The Gauntlet is set to begin production on the 6th January 2025 in Los Angeles.
Work on the eighth Mission: Impossible is still ongoing. A few days ago, filming was suspended because a submarine that forms an integral part of the filmās story couldnāt be lowered into the water. Itās yet another knock back for a project that has faced a string of them over the past few years. It also means that Cruise is probably going to be busy for a good while yet on the sequel, due out next summer.
Given the amount of work that is likely left on the next Mission: Impossible, this almost certainly means that this will be Cruiseās next film, meaning that his collaboration with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu on his next project will likely follow later in 2025. At some point, an official confirmation will arrive. When it does, weāll let you know.
