Medical drama The Good Doctor will end after the upcoming seventh series, it’s been revealed. Details here.

Freddie Highmore is one of a select few who was able to successfully go from fresh-faced child star, where he headlined Tim Burton’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, the underrated August Rush and The Spiderwick Chronicles, to a prolific acting career as an adult. The role that really put Highmore into the big leagues was playing Norman Bates, the younger version of Anthony Perkins’ character from Psycho, in five seasons of Bates Motel.

Immediately following the ending of the show, Highmore moved on to arguably his greatest performance as autistic surgical resident Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor. Based on a Korean show, writer David Shore developed and adapted it into the English language version, on which he acts as showrunner alongside Liz Friedman.

It followed the trials and tribulations of Murphy and he navigates the social hierarchy of the hospital.

Richard Schiff returns to play Shaun’s mentor, Dr Grassman. Other cast members in the final season include Chuku Modu as Dr Jared Kalu, Fiona Gubelmann as Dr Morgan Reznick, Will Yun Lee as Dr Alex Park, Christina Chang as Dr Audrey Lim, Paige Spara as Lea Dilallo, Bria Samoné Henderson as Dr Jordan Allen and Noah Galvin as Dr Asher Wolke.

It has now been confirmed by Deadline that the upcoming seventh series will be the last.

Seeking about the series, Highmore said “Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life. I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and (producer) Erin (Gunn) as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home. With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”

The seventh and final series of The Good Doctor will be broadcast on Sky Witness in the UK later this year.
