Apple TV+’s The Lost Bus sees Paul Greengrass back directing, with Matthew McConaughey in the lead. Here’s the trailer.
At some point later this year, The Lost Bus will premiere on Apple TV+, charting the perilous journey of a school bus full of kids trying desperately to outrun the Californian wildfires that perioically cause so much damage to the state.
Directed by the ever-reliable Paul Greengrass, the film is an adaptation of Lizzie Johnson’s book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle To Survive An American Wildfire.
Paul Greengrass usually excels when he’s working with story rooted in fact (see also: United 93 and Captain Philips) and he certainly seems like a perfect fit for this material.
Matthew McConaughey stars as Kevin McCay – ‘a bus driver who must navigate a bus carrying children and their teacher to safety through the 2018 Camp Fire, which became the deadliest fire in California history.’
Of course, just last year much of Los Angeles was ravaged by wildfires so the film will arrive whilst those tragedies are still very much at the forefront of minds.
Joining McConaughey are America Ferrera as school teacher Mary Ludwig along with Yul Vazquez as Ray Martinez, Ashlie Atkinson, Spencer Watson and Danny McCarthy.
We don’t yet have an exact release date but there is a trailer to check out below. As we saw with United 93, Paul Greengrass is a master at this form of docudrama and allied with the considerable talents of Matthew McConaughey – restored to leading man status after a few years of taking supporting roles – this one could be really quite special. (Making The Lost Bus was presumably a fruitful collaboration between director and star; Greengrass and McConaughey are also said to be working on another project together; 14th century-set drama, The Rage.)
Special enough to convince Apple to put it out in cinemas? Probably not, but we can hope can’t we? We’ll bring you more on The Lost Bus as we hear it. Here’s that trailer below.
