The Old Guard 2 is set for yet more reshoots, nearly three years after the film was originally shot. More here.

RememberThe Old Guard? It came out back in 2020 during those pandemic days when most of us found ourselves watching more movies at home. Perhaps partly due to that unique sitation (or parhaps not), the Charlize Theron-starring actioner amassed over 70 million views in its first month of release and given that the film was clearly intended as a franchise starter, a follow-up was duly commissioned and shot back in mid-2022.

Uma Thurman and Henry Golding join Theron and Kiki Layne for the sequel.

Since then, however, things have continued to be pretty turbulent, not least for Netflixā€™s film division, which has undergone a major shake-up. Scott Stuber, an executive who was known for throwing cash at expensive projects ā€“ such as Zack Snyderā€™s brace of Rebel Moon films ā€“ has since left.

Insead, Dan Lin is now at the helm of Netflixā€™s film division and the ā€˜make ā€™em cheaper, make ā€™em betterā€™ mantra is in full force. Given that The Old Guard 2 (according to World Of Reel) is now said to be entering its second round of reshoots, it seems like Lin is keen to ensure that the finished film meets a high quality standard and can solidify the health of the series moving forwards.

Victoria Mahoney took over for Gina Prince-Bythewood in the directorā€™s chair for the sequel, and it hasnā€™t exactly been plain sailing since then. The Netflix regime change saw the early stages of the projectā€™s post-production phase frozen, presumably while Lin cast his eye over things. Then the Hollywood strikes meant that things were held up further before a first round of reshoots was eventually ordered.

Given that the reshoots are said to be scheduled for early summer, thereā€™s still an outside chance that we could see The Old Guard 2 appear as a late 2025 release on the streaming platform, but it could yet slip into 2026. A six year break between films would be pretty sizeable, given that there hasnā€™t exactly been a clamour for The Old Guard 2. Still, the first one was a fun watch, so if the follow-up can capture the same spirit, we could yet be in for some more zesty action.

Weā€™ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
