2024 has been a little barren for horror films, but fear not, my friends. Things are looking up.
Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 is heading our way in May and if it captures even a smidge of the atmosphere of the 2008 original, we’re in good company.
The first trailer has just surfaced online for The Strangers: Chapter 1 and you can take a look at it below.
Chapter 1 is the third film in the franchise, following on from Bryan Bertino’s 2008 original film, simply titled The Strangers, and its 2018 sequel, Strangers: Prey At Night.
The trailer showcases the iconic masks worn by the intruders in Bertino’s film. The trailer’s tagline also invites us to “witness how the strangers became the strangers”.
The film stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Richard Brake and Ella Bruccoleri. Alan R Cohen and Alan Freedland have penned the script while Bertino also gets a story credit.

After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in THE STRANGERS ― CHAPTER 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is only the first in a trilogy of films directed by Finnish director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea). There’s no word on when Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 might premiere but according to Entertainment Weekly, the following two films, which were filmed at the same time as Chapter 1, will also premiere in 2024.
The Strangers has developed a cult following despite the lukewarm reviews upon the film’s release. Many, including myself, found the entire premise incredibly eerie and downright terrifying. The idea that someone could just break into my house and torture me felt a little too real.
The trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 also riffs on the famous line from the first film. In this one, Petsch’s character asks the intruders why they’re doing this. “Because you were here,” is the answer, having been changed from the original “Because you were home.”
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is hitting cinemas 11th May.
