The tiny budget indie slasher that’s broken the US top 10

Terrifier 2, which came before Terrifier 3, out in 2024

Terrifier 2 has become the sleeper hit of the season at the US box office – and it only cost $250,000 to make as well.

We’ve not really made note of this on this particular site yet, and shame on us for not doing so. For amongst the high profile, higher budget movies that currently sit in the US box office top ten, a slasher movie with a price tag of $250,000 has muscled its way in over the past couple of weeks.

As things stand, Terrifier 2 – following the last weekend in the US – sits in tenth place, and with a near-$10m gross at the American box office. Just one place above it lies the much higher budget Halloween Ends, that’s dropped down to ninth having been on release a week longer. Meanwhile, one month on from its debut, Terrifier 2’s performance is offering real hope to independent filmmakers.

Terrifier 2 is the sequel, as you might expect, to Terrifier, a film that came out back in 2016. There’s something really quite old school about its success too. Written, produced, directed and edited by Damien Leone, the film had originally been scheduled for a one-week limited release in America, across fewer than 1000 screens. Word of mouth has had something to say about that, and the movie has become the sleeper hit of the season.

Terrifier 3 is going to be on its way, it’s been confirmed. And Terrifier 2 has already debuted on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK if you want to give it a try. You can find the listing for it here.

In the meantime, Terrifier 2 continues to play in US cinemas. Who knows? It might just manage a further week in the top ten. The chances of Halloween Ends doing the same are very slim…
