Legendary suspense anthology series The Twilight Zone could be making a return to the big screen courtesy of star and Severance director Ben Stiller.
Ben Stiller’s success on the Apple TV+ series Severance hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the actor-filmmaker continues to be a rather busy man because of it. However, despite juggling a third season of the mind-bending drama series, a fourth Fockers film, The Seven Five and the 1970s crime drama feature, Bag Man, a new report from The InSneider suggests that Stiller may also be shepherding a new take on The Twilight Zone through development.
According to the report, the project has been set up at Warner Bros Pictures and Appian Way, with the production still in the early stages. As yet, things have been going for “roughly six months,” with the project still awaiting a writer to come in and get Stiller’s ideas into some kind of script. Given how busy Stiller is, that could certainly take some time, but the report does add that at the moment, the revival of The Twilight Zone isn’t set to be an anthology film.
If accurate, Stiller’s development of the legendary franchise puts him into rarefied air as a filmmaker. He joins the likes of George Miller, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and (more infamously) John Landis, who all directed segments of a 1983 film, while Jordan Peele produced and hosted a 2019 TV revival of the series. Forest Whittaker has also hosted a version of the show, while the original 1950s version was famously fronted by Rod Sterling.
Matt Reeves and Joseph Kosinski have also been attached to various versions of The Twilight Zone at different points, so as we said, Stiller is joining a pretty elite cabal of filmmakers who have also been fascinated by the enduring power of The Twilight Zone. It could take a good while yet for us to learn more about the project, if it ever does get past the developmental stage. If and when we do hear more though, we’ll certainly let you know.
