The final entry in Ti West’s decades-spanning slasher trilogy will arrive this summer, with Mia Goth in the lead role for MaXXXine.
Time can play some strange tricks on our minds. Although it’s been just two years since Ti West regaled us with X, the seedy period slasher film that launched his era-hopping horror trilogy, it paradoxically seems like we’ve been waiting for this film for a long time.
MaXXXine will mark the third entry in Ti West’s series of acclaimed slasher films and Mia Goth will once again star.
2022 gave us X, and in the same year he also released Pearl, with both films attracting considerable buzz for their stylish approach to the slasher genre.
Ti West and A24, the studio behind the films announced MaXXXine all the way back in September of 2022, following X's release and before we’d even seen Pearl. Since then, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the final film in West’s trilogy, not least because this time West and Goth are transporting us to the grimy streets of Hollywood in the early 80s.
According to World of Reel, the film will take place in 1985, five years after X, as Goth’s ‘heroine’ sets out in Hollywood to find fame. She gets a role in a cheapie horror sequel.’ Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Bobby Canavale, Michelle Monaghan round out the cast with a ‘scene-stealing’ Kevin Bacon on board too.
Last year proved to be a solid year at best for horror, especially away from the bigger, shinier studio releases. Whilst this year’s line-up doesn’t look as strong (on paper at least) we’re hopeful that a new clutch of breakout films will make it another good one. Either way though, MaXXine's July release is surely one of the high points on the calendar that horror fans can look forward to.
In a recent interview with horror outlet, What’s Under The Bed, West noted that he’s had an idea for a fourth film in the series so who knows, perhaps there’s more life beyond MaXXine? If you have suggestions about which era West could take us to next, let us know in the comments below.
