This Santa is no saint, as he sets out to deliver season’s beatings in Violent Night – here’s the first trailer.

There have been a plethora of Christmas films that show the darker side of Santa. From Krampus to the terrific Scandanavian film Rare Exports, not forgetting the over the top brutality that occurs when wrestler Bill Goldberg dons the red suit in Santa’s Slay.

This brings us to Violent Night, which takes the premise of Die Hard and replaces Bruce Willis with Santa Claus.

Yes, really.

The official synopsis reads as follows:

An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage inside. However, they aren’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.

Hellboy actor David Harbour is Santa, opposite John Leguizamo as the main antagonist. Other cast members include Cam Gigandet, Alex Hassell, Alexis Louder, Edi Patterson. Beverly ‘D’Angelo, who of course starred in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time, also appears.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters director Tommy Wirkola helmed the film from a screenplay by Sonic the Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Atomic Blonde director David Leitch is among the producers, so we can hope that is a stamp of quality when it comes to the action scenes.

Violent Night is set to be released in UK cinemas on the 2nd December. Watch the trailer below…
