It’s a highway to hell, as the buddy comedy takes a trip into the unknown: here’s the trailer for Next Exit. The buddy movie is a genre unto itself, and filmmakers relish the challenge of finding new angles from which drama can be drawn. This brings us to Next Exit, the directorial debut of Mali Elfman (daughter of film composer Danny), who also wrote the script. The official synopsis for this one reads: “When a research scientist makes national news proving she can track people into the afterlife, Rose sees a way out and Teddy sees his chance to finally make it. These two strangers, both harbouring dark secrets, race to join the doctor’s contentious study and leave this life behind. While Rose is haunted by a ghostly presence that she can’t outrun, Teddy is forced to confront his past. As these two misfits humorously quarrel their way across the country, they meet people along the way who force them to reckon with what is really driving them”. The film’s ensemble cast includes Rahul Kohli, Katie Parker, Rose McIvor, Tongayi Chirisa, Tim Griffin, , Nico Evers-Swindell and Karen Gillan and Diva Zappa (daughter of music icon Frank) A noted film producer, Elfman previously collaborated with Gillan on her directorial debut, 2015’s The Party’s Just Beginning, and will do so again on Axe Wound, set to be written and directed by Gillan. Next Exit premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on 10th June, with a wide release expected to be announced soon.
