The Expendables 4 lands in September, and here’s the first trailer for the promised collection of action carnage.

The Expendables are – for the most part – pretty fun films which bring together icons of the genre for an old school fight fest. Arguably the best balance of tone and action was The Expendables 2, which not only contained copious in jokes, it also delivered the long awaited smackdown between Sylvester Stallone and Jean Claude Van Damme. The third film drew criticism for toning down the violence and drawing focus to the younger stars as opposed to the stalwarts, although the final fight saw Stallone finally face off against Mel Gibson onscreen.

This brings us to The Expendables 4. This film will act as a bridge of sorts, with Stallone retiring from the franchise and passing the mantle on to Jason Statham. The tagline, which this time around is something of a tautology, is “They’ll die when they’re dead”. Surely a hat tip to Crank 2, there.

Reprising their roles are Stallone, in what is described as a ‘limited’ role, The Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture. Newcomers include The Raid star Iko Uwais as the main antagonist, 50 Cent, martial artist Tony Jaa, Megan Fox, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Sheila Shah, Eddie Hall and Andy Garcia.

Scott Waugh directs from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer, Ted Daggerhart and Max Adams.

The Expendables 4 will be released on 22nd September.
