Hayao Miyazaki’s 12th film is The Boy And the Heron, and we can’t wait: here’s the first trailer for it.

Hayao Miyazaki hasn’t made a film since 2013’s The Wind Rises.

His new film for Studio Ghibli is called The Boy and the Heron. The synopsis reads as follows:

During WWII, young Mahito Maki (Soma Santoki) suffers a heartbreaking family tragedy and must move immediately to the countryside, where his father (Takuya Kimura) works for a family making planes for Japan’s military, as Miyazaki’s own father did. Isolated, he begins exploring the mysterious landscapes & encounters a grey heron, persistent in its presence. The boy happens upon an abandoned tower. Curious, he enters. From there, The Boy and the Heron expands into a wondrous, often-startling phantasmagoria..

The Japanese voice cast also includes Masaki Suda, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Shōhei Hino and Ko Shibasaki.

Miyazaki writes and directs.

There is currently no UK release date, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
