The extended Ulysses Cut of Waterworld is heading to a massive IMAX screen in Bristol: more on the very special screening here.
1995’s Waterworld is a film often written about, often discussed, and often at the expense of the film in the midst of it all. Notorious when it was released for being the most expensive film of all time, it saw star and producer Kevin Costner and director Kevin Reynolds unite for a third film together. After the wonderful Fandango, they’d fall out over Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, make up, and then fall out again making Waterworld.
Famously, it wasn’t Reynolds’ cut of Waterworld that made it into cinemas back in 1995, and much footage was excised. But then, over time, alternate cuts have come to light, the longest of which is known as the ‘Ulysses’ version of the film. Those who bought the terrific Arrow Video set of Waterworld will have access to this, but this notably extended cut of the film has never been seen on the big screen in the UK.
Until 30th May 2025.
Thanks to the terrific team at the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival, Waterworld: The Ulysses Cut is getting not just its maiden UK cinema outing, but also, it’s going to be projected onto the IMAX screen at the Bristol Megascreen.
I’m delighted too to be introducing the film at the festival. I may have mentioned that I’m a bit of a Kevin Costner fan over the years, and I’ll be talking through the film and its story ahead of the film’s screening. I should have a few copies of Film Stories magazine with me too, if you fancy buying one.
Tickets for the screening event, which kicks off at 11.30am on Friday 30th May, can be procured here. Cash and cards accepted. Not dirt.
It’s also worth exploring the rest of the programme too if you get the chance, with Gale Anne Hurd the guest of honour at the festival. Not sure if she fancies a ticket to Waterworld, though, but you never know…
