Zach Cregger is to write and direct another original film, this time in the sci-fi genre: The Flood is due out in August 2028.
Having directed one of 2025’s most acclaimed genre films, Weapons, writer-director Zach Cregger has set up another original project – this time in the sci-fi genre. It’s called The Flood, it’s said to be a sci-fi movie and… that’s pretty much all we know for now.
But wait! Before you click the close button, there’s all the back-office studio stuff to deal with. Cregger will again be making the movie through New Line, owned by Warner Bros, but this time it’ll also be produced by Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin.
New Line’s president and Cregger both released statements, published by The Hollywood Reporter, saying how excited they are about working together again
“Zach is the rarest of filmmakers, fluent in every genre he touches, and we’re excited to continue our partnership,” New Line president Richard Brener said.
The Flood’s announcement comes at a busy time for Cregger. He’s currently putting the finishing touches to his Resident Evil film, due out on the 18th September 2026. He’s also writing a Weapons prequel for Oscar-winner Amy Madigan, though directing duties will be handed off to another filmmaker. That film is also due out in 2028.
Weapons emerged in a busy year for non-franchise genre films. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was another critically-lauded, Oscar-winning hit for Warner Bros; Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, although not a financial smash, was among 2025’s very best films.
With Cregger having the clout to push through another original project with The Flood, we’re quietly hopeful that studios will continue to invest in non-sequel movies. The past year has proven that, in the right circumstances, movie-goers will pay to see them in cinemas.
